Beta reading
Beta reading focuses on feedback from a reader’s perspective. Manuscript assessment
This is a big-picture read of your manuscript from an editorial perspective. It’s more in-depth than a beta read, but less intensive than a full developmental edit.
I will provide a short editorial report that identifies what’s working well in your story and potential areas of improvement. This may include feedback on story structure, character, point of view, pacing, dialogue, writing style and reader impact. The aim is to give you ideas on what to focus on during your next draft and help guide you through the self-editing process.Deliverables:

Hi, I'm Jacqui!
I'm a freelance editor based in Australia. I'm a lifelong lover of all things related to books, especially stories centred around strong protagonists, coming-of-age themes and personal empowerment.
I believe the best stories are the ones that resonate with readers on a deeper level.Stories can act as a mirror for our own experiences, or a window into different lives that spark empathy and curiosity. When readers connect with a story, it can validate their identity and experiences, and allow them to see the world in new ways. And that's exactly why I became an editor. Books are more than just entertainment or a means of escape; they are transformational and connect with us on a human level. My goal is to help authors feel confident in their work and guide them in creating stories that connect with their readers.
My background and training
I've been in the publishing industry for over five years, working both in-house and as a freelance editor. My in-house experience began at Bowen Street Press, editing a variety of texts across fiction, non-fiction and poetry. I then went on to work at Neap Education, specialising in developmental editing of educational resources for young adults.I have a Master of Writing and Publishing from RMIT University, where I received professional training in editing and publishing processes. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts from Deakin University, majoring in Literary Studies, along with minors in Children's Literature and Creative Writing.

Last year, I decided to leave my 9–5 and pursue freelance editing instead. It was a big leap of faith, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity to build more meaningful relationships with authors and work on the genres I love most.I’m particularly drawn to books grounded in magic, mythology, the supernatural and paranormal, dystopic realities, and everything in-between. I'm currently expanding my fiction portfolio, with fantasy, romance and sci-fi at the top of my wishlist. If this sounds like your story, feel free to get in touch or check out my services to learn more! When I'm not editing, I'm usually reading (go figure!), studying tarot, drinking copious amounts of tea, tending to my plants, spending time in nature, riding horses or dancing to Florence + The Machine.

Case study from the editing studio
Title: Book of Brujo
Author: Mark Shaw
Genre: Young adult, fantasy
Services provided: Line and copy editing
The client: Mark came to me looking for a hands-on editing approach to his manuscript. He’d had some challenging experiences with previous editors who relied too heavily on automated programs without thoroughly reading the manuscript, getting to know his characters and understanding the story. How I helped: I edited Mark’s manuscript to fix spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, and tighten up the flow of his prose. It was clear that Mark already had a knack for plot, pacing and characterisation, so a full developmental edit wasn’t necessary. However, I did flag any minor inconsistencies for Mark to check and queried him on any parts that required more extensive intervention. Respecting Mark's authorial voice and his vision were key to bringing this story to life. The experience: It was a pleasure to work with a talented indie author like Mark. Although I’ve only had the privilege of editing the second book of Mark’s trilogy, I’ve become invested in many of the characters and I’m excited to see how the story unfolds in the next instalment!
